New New Orleans airport terminal opens Wednesday
Officials on Tuesday cut the ribbon for the new Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport terminal, which opens to the public on Wednesday after multiple delays.
All 16 commercial airlines at MSY will operate from the new $1.3 billion terminal located at 1 Terminal Drive, Kenner, and the existing facility at 900 Airline Dr. will close to the public.
The 972,000-square foot facility includes three concourses, 35 gates, two new parking garages for short-term and long-term parking, a surface parking lot, and an economy garage with shuttle service.
SBA assistance available for businesses affected by Hard Rock collapse
The U.S. Small Business Administration has approved low-interest federal disaster loans to New Orleans businesses affected by the Hard Rock Hotel collapse, Gov. John Bel Edwards announced Tuesday. Impacts to businesses near the structure are expected to continue into 2020 due to street closures, structure stability, debris and clean up, Edwards’ office says.
Small nonfarm businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations may qualify for Economic Injury Disaster Loans of up to $2 million to help meet expenses, which could have been met by the businesses had the disaster not occurred.
The deadline to apply is Aug. 5, 2020. Applicants may apply online, receive additional disaster assistance information and download applications at disasterloan.sba.gov/ela.
Three workers were killed and more than 20 others were hurt Oct. 12 when portions of the upper floors of the building, which was under construction, collapsed.
Report: Louisiana had second-highest rate of early births
Last year, 13 percent of Louisiana women who gave birth had the child at least three weeks early, the second-highest rate in the nation, according to the March of Dimes.
The national rate was 10.02 percent, up from 9.63 percent in 2015, the organization says.
Louisiana scored an “F” on the March of Dimes preterm birth rate “report card,” as did Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, West Virginia and Puerto Rico.
“Premature birth and its complications are the largest contributors to infant death in this country and globally,” the organization says.
